The Public Record Office as it was then known, was established in 1954 but got its legal backing in 1957 by an ordinance known as the Public Archives Ordinance of 1957. The ordinance was repealed in 1992 with the National Archives decree N0 30 which later became an Act of the National Assembly in 2004. The permanent site of the National Archives located inside the University of Ibadan was completed in 1958. The first purpose archival building in tropical West Africa was erected to serve as the documentary memory bank of the country.
To ensure the permanent care, custody and management of all archives of the Federal Government and of such other archives in the country as enshrined in the National Archives Act of 2004, the National Archives of Nigeria continues to expand its activities in the country.
